David Southworth - Designer

Back in September 1996 I decided enough is enough, and walked away from my boring accountancy role. I wanted to sell, and had a firm belief that with a good product and the right company I would achieve financially what I was worth. I’d already purchased a Sharps bedroom in my very first house, so I knew the product was good, and decided to approach the company directly. After an interview and training I was launched and from day one loved the freedom the job gave me.

It’s a bit like being a bedroom social worker. Most customers know what problems they’ve got with their existing bedroom, but have very limited knowledge of how best to deal with them.

The key is to establish requirements and come up with the best possible solution. Although this often takes longer than perhaps just doing what the customer thinks they want as a design, I find my customers genuinely appreciate the care and time taken to ensure that Sharps provide the very best solution for them.

A typical day for me?

I am based in Preston as a Senior Design Consultant so 90% of my time is spent travelling to customers’ homes, offering advice and creative storage solutions to produce their dream bedroom! 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm appointments make up my days, requiring a civilised get-out-of-bed time (no 6.30am starts for me!), unless I’ve got an unusually long trip.

What has Sharps given me?

The freedom to work the hours I want to work, the ability to send my daughter to private school, something that I only could have dreamt of had I not worked for Sharps. Due to the generous annual reward scheme, I have even been all over the world on Club Trips.

Be prepared to learn and take on new challenges, don’t give up at the first hurdle, I was the worst at drawing by a considerable distance on my course! Never stop asking questions, the company have fantastic support structures in place. Work hard, and
you will be rewarded.
