Bringing out the best in attic bedrooms

There’s something inherently captivating about a loft bedroom. It’s in the adventurous tree-house feel they create, combining panoramic views and a sense of being somewhere secluded and secret. No matter your age, it’s almost impossible to resist their air of mystery and wonder, which is why it’s even more important to get them styled just right.

When you’re looking at how to decorate your loft bedroom, it’s all about preserving and enhancing that bright and breezy feel, while also maximising the potential of any awkward nooks and crannies. Stick with our advice from the experts at Sharps and you’ll be well on the way to the loft bedroom of your dreams.

1. Style in light neutrals

First up, let’s start with your base colour. To maintain a light and welcoming atmosphere in your loft bedroom, we recommend using a fresh neutral as a base tone.

Think teapot whites, brighter shades of cream and soft greys, all of which will help to reflect more light around your space.

Another advantage of using neutrals when looking at how to decorate your loft bedroom is that they’re super versatile, so they’ll easily work in your room design whether you prefer the sleek look of contemporary or something more traditional.

Then you can add in splashes of colour through your accessories and accent pieces.

2. Maximise space with fitted storage

Now’s the time to take stock of your space and assess the layout. Chances are you’ll be working around features like sloping ceilings, eaves and possibly also outcrops - it is a loft space, after all! In many instances, standard freestanding furniture won’t fit in, so it’s always a good idea to explore fitted storage.

The bespoke fitted wardrobes that we offer at Sharps can be customised even to very steep slopes, letting you maximise every millimetre of space.

But you can also blend in low-height furniture such as chests of drawers or dressing tables to fully round out the usability of your space. It doesn’t matter how awkward the interior is.

The beauty of bespoke is that it’s all custom built to fit perfectly. And if you need some more examples of just how customised fitted wardrobes can get, make sure to check out our Customer Stories.

Once you’ve added in your fitted loft furniture, you can start thinking about any extra flourishes you want to add to make it feel extra cosy.

3. Keep it minimalist

With sloping ceilings being a big factor in a loft bedroom layout, it’s easy for them to end up feeling boxed in and claustrophobic. Keep to the mantra of ‘a little goes a long way’ with these kinds of spaces. Take a more minimalistic approach to styling your loft bedroom, adding pieces in mindfully, thinking about what’s essential and what’s not.

This goes double for smaller loft spaces with less room to work with. If you’re fighting for every millimetre of space, keep decor to an absolute minimum. It could be as simple as adding a statement lamp to a bedside table, or if you’re really strapped for space, try adding artwork to your walls to work in some visual interest.

4. Maximise your natural light

Most loft bedrooms have the benefit of being able to capitalise on a lot of natural light. If you’re fortunate enough to have Velux skylights or some big floor-to-ceiling windows, you’re already easily on-track to having the perfect chilled-out loft bedroom.

But if you’ve got smaller windows, you might find switching up your curtains gets more sunlight into your space.

When thinking about how to decorate your loft bedroom, consider lightweight net or voile curtains, which let in the most amount of light into your space.

Voile in particular offers plenty of choice in terms of patterning and style.

Or, if you want to step away from synthetics, you can also find plenty of choice and colour in chic linen curtains.

5. Add in pops of colour

Though it’s tempting to stick with soft neutrals, we say don’t be afraid to add in a splash of colour. It could be through an accent wall or by blending in brighter fabrics but a touch of colour can be a real mood-lifter at the end of the day.

You could go with super poppy statement hues or for something more muted that creates a gentle contrast, it’s entirely up to you and what mood you’re trying to create.

And if you’re not sure what to go with, you can find plenty of colour schemes online to inspire your look.

6. Ambient lighting for atmosphere

Natural lighting is great but what about in the evenings? A really elegant loft bedroom design always works in some additional ambient light for a soft glow. Diffuse light works best, whether you prefer lamps, uplighters or sconces, but you can also add in accent lighting in some unusual places.

Our Vega shelf lights are perfect for fitted bookcases in bedrooms, integrating into your fitted furniture to add a gentle background glow.

Great for picking out the detail on your room decor and accessories, Vega shelf lighting brings effortless style into your loft bedroom layout.

And it’s dimmable too so creating cosy evenings tucked up in bed has never been easier.

For the most stunning results, pair up Vega with our slatted feature panels for a crisp, Scandi-style aesthetic.

7. Bring in different textures

To avoid your finished loft bedroom looking flat, try layering different textures into your design.

This is easiest to do with your soft furnishings, especially with your bed covers, so try adding in knitted or wool throws and maybe some scatter cushions with varied materials.

But you can also bring in layered textures with your hard furnishings as well.

Shimmering metallics on your accessories can make charming focal points but you can also blend in more natural materials like wicker and wood to add variety to your visual palette.

As you start thinking about how to decorate your loft bedroom, keep in mind that textures can be the difference between creating an average interior design and something much more engaging.

8. Squeeze in a workspace

If you’ve got the extra space handy, adding in a desk can take your loft bedroom design to the next level. As one of the few parts of the home that feels truly private and separated from the usual hustle and bustle of family life, attics and lofts make a natural choice for your designated working from home area.

Believe it or not, you can even work desks into spaces with low-height walls so you can have a quiet workspace to call your own.

And when you go for a bespoke fitted home office, it’ll always fit like a dream, following every contour to provide maximum storage.

Can’t fit in a traditional desk?

How about a dressing table or a cloffice built into your fitted wardrobes?

These can double-up as a petite remote working area whenever the occasion calls. The smarter way to make working from home simple.

9. Use mirrors to add depth

When your loft is lacking headroom and feels a tad small, this fantastic idea can make it feel much more open and spacious. With just the simple addition of a full-height mirror, you create a visual corridor effect, making your loft bedroom feel twice as large.

It’s a powerful illusion but one that feels ultra-glamorous, especially if your loft bedroom is where you choose your outfit for the day.

Get ready in style and add some much-needed depth into smaller attic spaces - this easy styling tip can completely transform the look and feel of your interior.

10. Build in extra seating

Don’t have a lot of spare room for seating? Then we’ve got exactly what you need… Storage benches are a fantastic match for loft bedrooms because they’re a space-saving, 2-in-1 solution.

They offer the seating that you want but also give you lots of extra storage space in the base, so you can hide away linen, pillows or anything else you want to keep out of the way.

And how can you not fall in love with their charming look?

Perfect paired up with windows, they make a brilliant spot for curling up with a book or listening to the rain pattering against the glass.

If you use your loft as a dressing room, they’re also a fantastic addition for slipping on your shoes in comfort.
