Your Home Is Your Haven

I think lockdown helped us to understand more than ever that our homes need to be our haven. As a home coach, I have long seen the benefits of a home environment that is in tune with your needs and goals in life.

Yet various studies have shown that there are too many of us that are unhappy with where we live. Some simple changes though, can go a long way and supercharge your life in 2024.

Diarise the To Do List:

The first thing you need to do is an inventory of your home. Go around each room and write down everything that makes you feel uneasy.

Colours, shapes of furniture, even dead leaves on plants can zap your energy and make you feel under par.

Once this is complete, you have your home ‘to do’ list. I like to categorise each job by how long they might take, setting aside a couple of hours for quick wins, through to full days in the diary for the bigger jobs.

By putting it in your diary you are more likely to get it done because if something else comes up you will reschedule.

Define Your Goals:

If your home is to align itself with your goals, you need to identify what those goals are.

If you have the funds, it’s worth booking in with a life coach, but there’s plenty you can do on your own.

Ask yourself what the three most important things are to you in life and where you’re at with these on a scale from 1-10. What would bring you closer to a 10 if nothing was getting in the way?

Define your goals with as much detail as possible and then work out which rooms you are most likely to be in when working towards these.

Consider Colour:

Every room has a different function and you may find your needs change from one to another.

Perhaps the living room is a place you need to chill out, or if it’s multi-functional you might want it to energise you.

The colours need to be in line with that need, so work out what makes you tick.

Look at some colour mood boards online and see what each one does for you to guide a change in décor.

Let in the Light:

Never underestimate the power of light to your rhythm. If you have plenty of natural light, this can be brilliant during the day, but if you use the room at night some thought needs to go into whether you need waking up or winding down.

If you’re lacking natural light, strategically placed mirrors can be placed to maximise windows.

SAD lights can also be game changers for mood and energy – particularly during the winter months.

Make sure corners are well lit to make the most of the room and if rooms are multifunctional, consider using lighting to create focus zones.

Declutter As You Go:

We all know a cluttered space means a cluttered mind, but you’d be surprised just how much extra ‘stuff’ can zap your motivation.

If the only thing you do to your home in 2024 is declutter and put organisation systems in place, you will find that your home can start to power your journey to your 2024 goals.

Small or awkward spaces can often be the most fun to plan, especially when it comes to storage.

Thinking creatively about utilising every nook and cranny pushes us to try new things in terms of both style and function.
